Digital Photography

This course is a hands-on course. Students take pictures using Canon Powershot cameras,/ Nikon, or a personal DSLR camera while learning the basics of photography. Students study the art elements and principles of design as well as the photography rules of composition. They learn how to use the camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO to create quality photographs. Students gain valuable skills by working with the powerful Adobe Photoshop CC program to edit their photos. The culminating final project is a collection of photographs demonstrating their understanding of basic photography and the genres.  Students write their own artist statement and present their final photos to the class.

Student Experiences

• Differentiate among types and uses of digital cameras, equipment, and accessories (i.e., point-and-shoot, mirrorless, DSLR, lenses, filters, tripods, lighting equipment, etc.).
• Incorporate principles of design (e.g., contrast, repetition, balance, movement, emphasis, harmony, proportion, and unity) when composing photographs.
• Explain the importance of an industry standard color management system.
